BB8 Hat Free Crochet Pattern

Star Wars is something special in my house. See we have two kids, 10 years apart and one of each. So finding a common interest isn’t always easy, but Star Wars is the exception. It's something we all love and a common bond between us. We play Star Wars board games, such as Star Wars X-wing and Imperial Assault. We hold a movie marathon every May the 4th and we play Star Wars Battlefront on the PlayStation. It’s really nice to have one thing we all truly enjoy doing together despite the age gaps.

Shortly after making my first BB-8 hat, my daughter said, “Hey wouldn’t it be cute if the hat was his body and his little head was on top.” I grabbed my hook before she could finish and started right away. You can find the pattern for my other BB-8 Hat here.

Using graph paper I worked on mapping out what the body would look like. It took a few days and a lot to trial and error, but we got it. After I made his head, it was time to assemble. As we were placing the head onto the hat, we could see him coming to life.

It seems that every time I make this hat, I position his head a little differently and each hat has their own expression. I encourage you to play around with it to find the position of the head that suits your own BB-8’s personality.

The pattern on the body is done by changing colors. I break off the strand of yarn and join to the new color. I know it’s a little extra work to weave all the ends in but I’ve found that if I just yarn over the other color the hat loses its stretch. I believe it’s worth the little extra time. So get your yarn needle out and start weaving in those ends.
